Jerry Decker, 71 - June 02, 2012


Jerry Brent Decker, 71, formerly of Gothenburg, died Saturday, June 2, 2012.
A memorial service celebrating his life will take place on Friday, July 27, at 2 p.m. at the Banner Methodist Church, 43997 Banner Rd., Gothenburg, with the Rev. Janie Freeman officiating. A reception will follow at the church.
Decker was born Jan. 17, 1941, at Richmond, CA, to Spencer Stewart Decker, Sr. and Earline Mae (Tilson) Decker.
He graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1958. He and his brother, Spence, participated in football, basketball, track and baseball during their high school years.
Decker also attended Kearney State College for two years, and served with the Army National Guard.
He moved to California and became a hairdresser and owned Jerry and Co. Hair Designs in San Leandro, CA.
On April 16, 1966, he married Helen Jewel. He retired in 1998 to take care of his wife. After the couple moved to El Dorado, AR, he worked at the Lions Club Golf Course where he made many great friends, according to family members.
Decker was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church where he served as an usher, office volunteer, a football referee for the Children’s Christian Formation on Wednesday afternoons, and assisted with the youth (EYC) meetings.
He was a reading tutor with El Dorado Connections and a volunteer with Hope Landing. He was also a member of the Silver Kickers from Champagnolle Landing.
?Decker loved life, his family and friends as well as golf, hiking, line dancing, and most of all, the Nebraska Cornhuskers, said family members.
He was proceeded in death by: his wife, Helen; his parents, Spencer Decker, Sr. and Earline Silveria; stepmother, Judith Decker; stepfather, Miland Silveria; brother, Spencer Decker, Jr.; a nephew, Jay Decker; niece, Pam Dreher.
Survivors include: his sister, Dixie (Rod) Dreher of Elwood; a sister-in-law, Janean Decker of Houston, TX ; nephews—Ted Decker, Gary (Gayle) McKenzie and Tom (Angel) Dreher; nieces—Kris (Reiny) Grasmick, Sheri (Dave) Giesbrecht, Susan
(Sam) Hock, Karol Nelson, Anne (Ron) Schmidt and Lynell (Muriel) Decker Martins; 16 great-nieces and nephews and three great-great-nieces and nephews; special friend, Jessie Butterfield and her family; the Class of 1958 and many other family members.
A memorial has been established at Banner Methodist Church or the donor’s choice.
