Robert Smith, 90 - November 30, 2011
Robert “Bob” Smith, 90 of Cozad, died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011, at his home in Cozad.
Services will be held on Monday, Dec. 5, at 1:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Cozad with the Rev. Doug Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Cozad Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad.
Smith was born Feb. 16, 1921 at Cozad to Hans and Leah (Harrington) Smith. He graduated from Cozad High School in 1939.
In 1941, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps where he served in Europe. During his tour of duty, he met his future wife, Gwen Chard, while serving in England in 1943. He and Gwen were married on May 5, 1945, at South Bank, England.
After Smith was discharged, his wife joined him in Cozad. They resided on a farm north of Cozad, where they raised their family. The couple were the parents of four boys—Robin, Kent, Tony and Tim.
Smith was a good athlete in his younger days, family members said. He enjoyed playing golf, tennis and ping-pong among other things. He always enjoyed feeding his cattle and traveling. He loved spending time with his family, and thoroughly enjoyed when his English relatives would come to the U.S. to visit, according to the family.
Smith was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church in Cozad. He was a charter member of the Cozad Elks Lodge #2250 and was a member of the VFW. He was a true gentleman, and never had a bad word to say of others, the family said. He will be remembered as a kind and loving husband, father, grandpa and friend.
?He was preceded in death by: his parents; grandson, Jason Smith; daughter-in-law, Deb Smith; brother, Juhl Smith; sister-in-law, Vera Smith; and half-sister, Betty Carr.
Smith is survived by: his wife of over 66 years, Gwen Smith of Cozad; four sons—Robin (Karen) Smith of Cozad, Kent Smith of Phoenix, AZ, Tony (Ann) Smith of Cozad, Tim (Patti) Smith of Cozad; grandchildren—Amy Smith of Lincoln, Matt Smith of Cozad, Ryan Smith of Oakland, CA, Dustin (Jennie) Smith of Cozad, Nic (Becka) Smith of Cozad, Kevin (Lisa) Smith of Cozad, Corey (Courtney) Smith of Bennington; nine great grandchildren—Kylie, Erika, Emily, Jaylee, Callie, Autumn, Cassie, Krasen and Chase; and many other relatives and friends.
A memorial has been established in his memory.
