Marcella Gunderson, 90 - November 24, 2011
Marcella Margaret Gunderson, 90, of North Platte died Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011, at Linden Court in North Platte, the last survivor of her six brothers and sisters.
Mass of Christian burial will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 2, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with the Rev. Jim Novakowski as celebrant. Inurnment will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery.
A memorial book may be signed from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday at Odean Colonial Chapel At C & Sycamore which is in charge of arrangements.
Gunderson was born May 13, 1921, to Weston J. and Mary Anna Wolters Whitcomb at Moorhead, MN, where she grew up and graduated from Moorhead High School.
On June 29, 1946, she was united in marriage to LeRoy Haig Gunderson at Moorhead. Shortly thereafter the couple moved to Nebraska, and in 1967 they moved to North Platte where her husband worked for Duling Optical until he retired. They then spent winters at Sun City, AZ, and summers in North Platte.
She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, and belonged to several bridge clubs and loved to play bridge and duplicate bridge, according to family members. She also enjoyed working crossword puzzles and loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Gunderson was preceded in death by: her husband, Haig Gunderson; her parents, Weston and Mary Anna Whitcomb; four sisters—Harriet Frolund, her twin Martha Anderson, Mary Knudson and Margaret Hoover; two brothers—Robert J. Whitcomb and Harold Whitcomb; grandson, Kevin Gunderson.
Survivors include: her daughter, Mary Anna (Ross) Bartlett of Cozad; two sons—Fredrick, (Patricia) Gunderson of Scottsdale, AZ, and Thomas (Kathy) Gunderson, of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren and great-grandchildren—Erik (Monica) Gunderson and their sons, Gavin and Cruz, Stacy Gunderson, Shane Gunderson and special friend Stacy, Mike (Kelley) Gunderson and their sons, Weston and Cole, Chad (Erin) Gunderson and their daughter, Ella Rose, Jason Bartlett, Marcus (Taci) Bartlett and their children, Tucker and Chesney, Brian Bartlett, and Katie (Brendon) Vlasin and their daughters, Emma, Ava and Isabelle; numerous other family members.
A memorial has been established for the North Platte Catholic Schools Endowment Trust and may be sent to the Marcella Gunderson Memorial, P.O. Box 151, Gothenburg, NE 69138.
