James West, 81 - June 17, 2009
James “Jim” Harlan West, 81, of Gothenburg died Thursday, June 11, 2009, at the Gothenburg Memorial Hospital.
Services were held June 13 at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg with the Rev. Matt Coplen officiating. Burial took place at the Gothenburg Cemetery.
West was born March 8, 1928, to Willard and Edith (Ehmen) West at Gothenburg. He graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1946.
On Oct. 23, 1949, he married Doris Janus at Gothenburg, where the couple continued to reside. To this union, two children were born.
He served his country with the U.S. Army from 1949-1952, and was stationed in Germany.
West worked for Cornhusker Hardware for 28 years and Farmland Coop for 10 years.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church since 1945, the Gothenburg Fire Department for 25 years, the American Legion, VFW and Mason Lodge 32 AF-AM. He also served on the Board of Public Works for four years and the Hospital Board for three years.
West was preceded in death by: his wife, Doris; his parents, Willard and Edith West; six sisters—Velma West, Jean West, Gretchen West, Treva West, Arlene West and Carol West.
Survivors include: his son, Taun (Charlene) West of Lexington; his daughter, Taine (Shane) Fruit of Ogallala; grandchildren—Jessica West, Destinee (Cory) Steinke, Shayna (fiance, Tyler Swaney) Fruit, Tanner Fruit and Tayler Fruit; numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church, the Alzheimer’s Association and the Gothenburg Volunteer Fire Department.
