Pauline Wells, 91 - January 31, 2007
Pauline Wells, 91, of Hays, KS, formerly of Gothenburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007, at Good Samaritan Center Nursing Home at Hays.
Services were held on Monday, Jan. 29, at the American Lutheran Church of Gothenburg with the Rev. Matthew Groenke and Lonna Grabenstein, PMA, officiating. Burial was at the Gothenburg Cemetery.
Wells was born June 26, 1915, at Lincoln, to Philip John and Rosina Marie (Schmidt) Kufeldt. She was the first child of that family to be born in the United States. Seven older children were born in Russia. The family moved to Scottsbluff and then to Lexington
On Feb. 17, 1935, she was united in marriage to William Paul “Bill” Wells. The couple had lived in Lexington and Cozad, and in the spring of 1945, they moved to Gothenburg. She and her husband had farmed in all of these areas.
In 1978, Wells and her family moved into Gothenburg, where she worked at Schriver’s Market until its closing.
Wells was very active as a volunteer for the Gothenburg Senior Center and was an active blood donor. She was a member of the bridge club and enjoyed quilting for church projects, according to family members. She also enjoyed bowling and was a member of two teams, one of which, members were all over 80 years of age.
?She was preceded in death by: her husband, Bill; seven brothers—George (Anna Rose), Alex (Mary), Soloman (Leona), Willie (Betty), Philip (Daphne), Carl and David; two sisters—Rose Minch (Henry) and Dorothy.
?Survivors include: a son, William Allen Wells of Mesquite, NV; a daughter, Betty (Jerry) Stark of Hays; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; three sisters—Amelia (Walter Howard) Nicks of Denver, CO, Lydia (Dean Hee and Harold) Hettinger of Sterling, CO, and Lea (Charlie) Hayes of Central City; several nieces and nephews.
