Sister Mary Dominic Lawrence, 80 - May 09, 2007
Sister Mary Dominic Lawrence OSM, who served Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in the early 1980s, died March 9, 2007, at Saint Juliana’s Convent in Bognor Regis, England.
She was born on July 25, 1926, in London and raised as an Anglican. She received her bachelor of arts in education degree at the University of London and further education at the University of the West Indies. She served as a W.R.E.N. in the Royal Navy and became a Catholic at that time. She subsequently taught at Villa Maria School in Bognor Regis, where she came in contact with the Servants of Mary. She entered the Congregation of the Servants of Mary in London in 1953 and served as a missionary in Jamaica for 23 years.
She visited the United States in 1970 and ended up working at Marian High School in Omaha. She returned to Jamaica in 1973, but came back to Nebraska in 1978 and served as a parish minister in Wood River, Gothenburg and Cozad.
In 1983, she arrived in Rome, Italy, where she served as the generalate of the Servants of Mary as the general treasurer and archivist.
?She was diagnosed with cancer in 1988 while visiting in Omaha. After treatment and surgery, she lived over 18 more years.
?She returned to her native England and had served for the past 12 years in pastoral ministry in Sheffield.
?Her friends knew her as being artistic, an inspirational gardener and one who loved needlework and craftwork.
Sister Joy Weideman OSM, archivist for the Servants of Mary and long time friend, describes Sister Dominic as “an amazing woman who could do anything, a missionary in heart and mind who possessed a deep love for Our Lady.”
She celebrated the 50th anniversary of her vows in 2004. She was buried in the Arundel Cathedral Cemetary-Arundal, England on March 20.
