Robert Hinze, 84 - May 23, 2007
Robert “Bob” Otto Emil Hinze, 84, of Gothenburg, died Thursday, May 17, 2007, at Gothenburg Memorial Hospital.
Services were held on Tuesday, May 22, at the Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Bill Terry officiating. Burial was at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery.
Hinze was born on Nov. 3, 1922, to Otto Alfred and Pearl Louise (Bauman) Hinze, at the family home in Surprise.
He grew up in Surprise attending Green Leaf Elementary and Surprise High School. Following his sophomore year in high school, he and his family moved to Gothenburg.
Hinze attended his junior and senior years at Gothenburg High School, graduating in 1941. After high school, he attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
He then returned to the family farm, due partly to his father’s illness, which was the beginning of his career in agriculture. Later, because of his deep respect for higher education, he saw to it that his four sons achieved their educational goals.
On March 2, 1947, he married Esther Leona Stevens at the Zion Lutheran Church of Gothenburg. To this union, four sons were born, Steven, Grant, Mathieu and Mark.
Hinze and his wife made their home north of Gothenburg where he farmed and ranched until they moved to town in 2006.
He was a member of the Masonic Temple in Gothenburg and was also a member of the Zion Lutheran Church where he played the piano and organ from 1941 until 1971, and was a member of the choir from 1939 until present as well as being active in many other aspects of the church.
?Hinze enjoyed baseball, playing semi-pro ball for the “Sodbusters,” having a true love of the game of baseball, which he passed onto his boys, according to family members. He also enjoyed flat shooting rifles, farming and ranching.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, Otto A. in 1962, and Pearl L. in 1984; a sister, Luberta Harrington in 2005.
Survivors include: his wife of 60 years, Esther Leona of Gothenburg; four sons—Steven Robert (Shari) of North Platte, Grant Joel (Kay) of Holdrege, Mathieu Lane (Julie) of Lincoln, and Mark Reed (Janice) of Hastings; 15 grandchildren—Robert C. (Jennifer), Todd S. (Lori), Michelle L., Monte J., Jamie K. (Joe), Megan L., Janelle L., Creighton J., Garth A. (Holly), Erin E. (Timothy), Halley M., Wilson, Jason, Trent and Timothy (Alicia); six great-grandchildren—Steven, Malcolm, Isaac, Madalin, Jacquelyn, Zachary Alex and a great-grandchild on-the-way.
Memorials are suggested to the Zion Lutheran Church.
