John Bill Banks, 78 - June 20, 2007
John W. “Bill” Banks, 78, of Sterling, IL, died Wednesday, June 13, 2007, at C.G.H. Medical Center in Sterling.
Services were held June 16, at the First Church of the Nazarene at Sterling with the Rev. Robert J. Hasselbring officiating. Interment took place at Riverside Cemetery with graveside military rites.
Banks was born on Aug. 14, 1928, at Gothenburg to David E. and Minnie V. (Moore) Banks. He attended and graduated from Farnam High School.
On Dec. 17, 1953, he married Barbara L. Alber at Sterling.
Banks served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
He was employed by Northwestern Steel & Wire Company at Sterling, then by R B & W of Rock Falls, IL. He then worked as a custodian at the Morrison Southside Grade School and raised registered Angus cattle in the rural Morrison area. He most recently was employed with the United States Postal Service at the Morrison Post Office, retiring in 1991.
?Banks was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene of Sterling, the American Legion Morrison Post No. 328 and Morrison VFW Post N0. 8281.
?He was preceded in death by: his parents, David and Minnie; a sister, Donna Bottita.
?Survivors include: his wife, Barbara; a daughter, Bethany (Dr. John) Lorenz of Evansville, IN; two sons—Michael (Kathy) Banks of Sterling and Jason (Lori) Banks of Garden Prairie, IL; four grandchildren—Tracy (Mrs. Ian) Geiger, Gregory Banks, Chelsey Banks and Paul Joseph Lorenz; a sister, Phyllis Thornton of Clarion, IA.
Memorials are suggested to Wounded Knee Indian Reservation of Wounded Knee, SD.
