Vera Geiken, 83 - March 19, 2008
Vera Marie Geiken, 83, of Gothenburg died Saturday, March 15, 2008, at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg.
Services were held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the American Lutheran Church of Gothenburg with the Rev. Matthew Groenke and Lonna Grabenstein, PMA, officiating. Burial took place at the Gothenburg Cemetery.
Geiken was born on Dec. 13, 1924, at Gothenburg to Jurgen and Minnie (Heuer) Heidebrink.
After graduating from Gothenburg High School, she worked for Dr. Harvey for a few years prior to her marriage.
She was united in marriage to Westley H. Geiken on April 20, 1947, at Gothenburg. To this union, a daughter was born.
Geiken attended the St. John’s Lutheran Church and later the American Lutheran Church.
She spent her life volunteering for many organizations and was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Hospital Auxiliary, Bloodmobile, PVC Club, Extension, Cozad and North Platte Rock & Gem Clubs, exercise class and the Girl Scouts.
Geiken enjoyed volunteering wherever she was needed. She enjoyed family and friends and kept busy with her garden and yard work, knitting and church activities, according to family members.
?She was preceded in death by: her husband, Westley in 1993; her parents, Jurgen and Minnie; five siblings—Walter, Lester, Marvin, Earl and Alma; father and mother-in-law, Bert and Cora Geiken; sister-in-law, Opal Yiengst.
?Survivors include: her daughter, Donna Lee McConnell of Gothenburg; her sister, Alice (Frank) Boyd of Gothenburg; two grandsons—Jim and Jon; four great-grandchildren—Shawn, Rylee, Tiffany and Elizabeth; a niece, Kay (DeLoyce) Robinson; five nephews—Roger Heidebrink, Bob, David, Tom and Doug Boyd; special cousin, LaVonne (Fred) Werkmeister; many extended family members.
Memorials are suggested to the American Lutheran Church, Central Plains Hospice or the family.
