Carl Brown, 80 - February 25, 2009
Carl Ivan Brown, 80, of Des Moines, IA, formerly of Farnam, died at home on Monday, Feb. 16, 2009.
Services were held on Friday, Feb. 20, at Grandview Park Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Raymond of the Rising Son Church of Christ officiating. Interment took place at the Rising Sun Cemetery.
Brown was born July 28, 1928, to Marion and Lillie (Stephens) Brown at Kimball.
He moved to Des Moines in 1949 following two years of service in Japan with the United States Army.
Brown was employed for 23 years as a clerk for the U.S. Post Office at Des Moines.
He was a member of the Eastgate Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Za Ga Zig Shrine.
Brown enjoyed his retirement and spent much of his time puttering in his garage and around his yard, according to family members. Much to the delight of family, friends and neighbors, he decorated the outside of his home for each holiday season; the displays brightened a corner of his neighborhood and lifted many spirits, the family said.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, Marion and Lillie; a brother, Marion; sister, Dorothy Rinke; brother-in-law, Kenneth Kostman.
Survivors include: his wife of 57 years, Doris Brown; two sons—Carl “Shorty” (Stephanie) Brown and Tim (Linda) Brown, all of Des Moines; a daughter, April (Pat) Hurley of Pleasant Hill; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; four brothers—Robert (Barbara) of Des Moines, Kenneth (Evonne) of Gothenburg, Thomas (Claire) of Arizona, and Vernon (Jan) of Iowa; three sisters—Lillian (Virgil) Dishman of Iowa, Rose Kostman and Juanita (Boyd) Lynch, all of Cozad.
Memorials are suggested to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children.
