Bernice Josten, 91 - March 02, 2014Bernice Florence Josten, 91, formerly of Elgin, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 7, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin with the Revs. Ross Burkhalter and Curtiss Dwyer officiating. Interment will be at the parish cemetery.
A visitation will take place on Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the church with a 7:30 p.m. wake service.
Josten was born the daughter of Henry and Mary (Deitering) Heithoff at Elgin. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church.
She graduated from St. Boniface High School in Elgin, and from St. Francis School of Nursing in Grand Island.
On Aug. 22, 1946, she was united in marriage to Sylvester “Vet” Josten at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin. The couple resided at Elgin where she was employed as a registered nurse at the Neligh Hospital.
Over the years, Josten also worked as a dental assistant and as a school nurse.
In September of 2003, she and her husband moved to the Willow Ridge Retirement Center at McCook, and in June of 2007, they entered the Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.
Josten was a lifelong member of St. Boniface Catholic Church.
She enjoyed spending time with family and loved the health care profession and living a healthy lifestyle as well as fishing, playing the organ, the piano and accordion, according to family members.
?Josten was preceded in death by: her parents, Henry and Mary; her husband, Sylvester in 2007; two brothers—Alvin and Lavern Heithoff; a sister, Beatrice.
Survivors include: her four children—Jean (Pat) Breen of Farnam, Judy (Jac) Ferril of Aurora, CO, Jim (Corrine) Josten of Pleasant Hill, MO, and Doris (Ron) Friehe of McCook; grandchildren—Carrie (Jim) Krist, Greg (Charlotte) Stuhr, Aaron (Valaree) Stuhr, Scott (Stephanie) Stuhr, the Rev. Curtiss Dwyer, Gina (Jason) Eidinger, Nora (David) Bonfoey, Carl (Sarah) Dwyer, Jennifer (Adam) Burns, Annie (Andy) Perkins, Mary Ellen Josten, Valerie (Brionn) Tonkin, Sam (Kayla) Friehe and Brian (Tiffany) Friehe; 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law—Verlene Heithoff of Canada and Mary Ann Heithoff of California; brother-in-law, Kenzy (Clem) Josten of Oregon; numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.
