Jose “Joe” Gomez Martinez, 83, of Rotan, TX, brother of a Gothenburg resident, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, at Rotan.Services took place on Friday, Dec. 6, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rotan with the Rev. Teresito Paqueo officiating. Burial was at El Ranchito at Fisher County, TX.
Martinez was born Oct. 7, 1930, at San Angelo, TX, son of the late Jose “Joe” and Petra (Gomez) Martinez.
He was a lifelong resident of Fisher County, moving to Rotan as a child.
Martinez was united in marriage to Janie Vasquez on Sept. 15, 1952, at Rotan.
He was a self-employed farmer and the owner of two gas stations, Conoco and Mobil, which later became Fina.
Martinez also played guitar and the accordion with his band, the Las Navagantes.
He loved spending time with his grandchildren and liked mowing his yard and watching old western movies, according to family members.
Martinez was preceded in death by: his parents, Jose and Petra; a granddaughter, Alethea Flores; a grandson, Alonzo Lujan, II; three brothers—Augustine, Edward and Gabino Martinez; a sister, Maggie Ramirez.
Survivors include: his wife, Janie Martinez of Rotan; three sons and daughters-in-law—Jesse (Rosa) Martinez and Ronnie (Leanne) Martinez, all of Rotan, and Randy (Rachel) Martinez of Santa Barbara, CA; seven daughters and sons-in-law—Linda (Glen) Hot of Ruidoso, NM, Rosemary (Paul) Carrillo, Irene (Alonzo) Luluan, Jean (Santos) Flores, Jo Ann (Rudy) Yanez and Pat (Val) Morin, all of Rotan, and Maryann (Alex) Flores of Abilene; a brother, Johnny Martinez; four sisters and three brothers-in-law—Jane (Raymond) Ortega, Vera (Wally) Cantu, Molly (Shorty) Magana of Gothenburg, Mary Ortiz and Eva Barrera; sister-in-law, Mickey Martinez; and his dog, Oscar.
