Arboretum affiliate dedication planned
A University of Nebraska’s Nebraska Statewide Arboretums, Inc. group will be dedicating Ehmen Park as an Arboretum Affiliate on Wednesday, June 11, at 5 p.m. at the park.
The public is invited.
Bob Henrickson, Justin Evertson and Jackie Urkoski will dedicate Ehmen Park and lead a tour of the trees in Ehmen Park.
“They are helping us get started with the exciting process of identifying and documenting the over 40 different kinds of trees, creating signage for each tree and to lead tourists into town, building a website, inputting info for the GPS system, and creating publicity to let the rest of the world know what a gem we have here in Gothenburg,” said Nancy Fisher, local curator.
This won’t all happen overnight, but leading the efforts will be a committee of Jeff Kennedy, Bruce Clymer, Anne Anderson, Joyce Hudson, Sheila Jobman, Tim Lauer, Shawn Adameck, Ebony Anderson, Sally Dalrymple and Fisher. They will be aided by the Gothenburg Gardenaires, sponsor.
“We are especially eager to work with some of our younger folks with interest and experience in growing things,” Fisher said. “For example, Shawn Adameck of RTI has some horticulture coursework at the University of Nebraska as well as good computer skills and Ebony Anderson will be bringing in several other FFA students with interests in horticulture to help.”
The group hopes to see families with children attend the dedication and tour, sparking their interest in gardening, landscaping, horticulture and preserving our green environment for their generation and beyond.
“Look for the balloons and the cookies and lemonade in the shade of these beautiful trees,” Fisher said.
