Backyard BBQ new event at contest
Second annual Pony Express BBQ Challenge this weekend
Smoke will be wafting this weekend at Lafayette Park when the second annual Pony Express BBQ challenge gets underway.
Twenty-seven teams, made up of professional and first-time barbecuers from several states, will vie for $7,000 in prize money.
A new event, the Backyard BBQ contest, will offer attendees a chance to taste barbecue prepared by local cooks who will use their own special sauces and rubs, according to Community Development Office director Anne Anderson.
Up to 15 teams will cook ribs and chicken and an optional side.
The public can sample the fare and choose the winners of three cash prizes.
“It’s another chance to taste delicious barbecue and that’s what this whole event is about—two days of great eating,” Anderson said.
Something else new, she said, is a raffle for $1,000 in “Grillin’ Grub” Bucks sponsored by Horizon Ag and Peterson’s Supermarket.
Raffle tickets are $5 for one or $20 for a book of five and are available at Gothenburg State Bank, First State Bank, Horizon Ag and the Chamber Office.
Tickets will also be on hand Friday evening and Saturday at the event.
Early Saturday, barbecuers will begin grilling and smoking and continue throughout the day.
Certified judges will sample how contestants prepare beef, pork, chicken and brisket.
City-wide garage sales begin at 8 a.m. Saturday. A list of addresses appears elsewhere in this issue.
The Gothenburg Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the garage sales and the Gothenburg Chamber Ag and Special Projects Committees is the sponsor of the BBQ challenge
