110 hurdles race leads boys at Ogallala
With a high in the upper 60s and very little wind, the conditions were set for some good performances Saturday at the Ed Moore Invitational at Ogallala.
The Gothenburg boys track squad earned a fifth place team finish with three gold medal efforts.
Sidney was the team champion with 103 points. Mitchell placed second with 82. Gothenburg scored 65 for fifth.
Senior Blake Ristine breezed to first place in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 15 seconds flat, reaching No. 8 on the Swede all-time chart.
“It was about as fine a race as I’ve ever seen Blake run in the highs,” Swede coach Steve Reeves said. “He ran a great, clean race. He got out in front and never looked back.”
Dawson Graham, a freshman, took the gold in the long jump going 20-6.
“He’s been real steady in the mid-20s (for the) long jump,” the coach said. “I’m sure he is eyeing that freshman record. He’s got to go 21-3 to get that.
“He’s been a great addition to our track team because he can also help us in the sprints as well as the jumps.”
Discus throwers didn’t get any help from the wind Saturday. Tanner Borchardt still went 150-1 for the gold medal. The Swede senior had the only silver medal effort for Gothenburg taking second place in the shot with a toss of 53-6.
“I’m sure he’s a little disappointed in the shot,” Reeves said. “That Lewis kid (Logan of Sidney) threw a little further than he did. He will be a district opponent. I’m sure Tanner will always have him in the back of his mind the rest of the year.”
The winning toss by Lewis went 54-3.
Third place finishers for Gothenburg included Seth Eggleston in the 300 hurdles and Skyler Kottwitz in the pole vault.
The Swede 4x100 relay placed third and included Braeden Brundage, Ross Ostendorf, Graham and Zach Wolf.
The Swedes travel to the Broken Bow Invitational Friday. The action starts with the boys pole vault at 2:15 p.m. followed by other field events at 2:30. Running events get underway at 4 p.m.
