Brady continues strong winning tradition

Senior girls collect 80 career wins.

Positive attitudes and a desire to win is what propelled the Brady girls basketball team to a 19-3 record.

Head coach Lance Arterburn said the team was made up of hard workers that had good practices all season.

Although he noted the girls didn’t make their ultimate goal of playing in the state tournament, Arterburn said that doesn’t take away from what the team did.

The girls weren’t negative which made it an enjoyable season, he said.

“We had a very unselfish team that only cared about winning,” Arterburn said. “The girls didn’t care about their own statistics. They only cared about what was best for the program.”

That unselfish attitude led to eight different girls leading the Eagles in scoring at some point in the season for a game.

However, the Brady program does face a challenge of replacing six seniors who each played significant minutes this season.

Not to mention setting the success bar fairly high, Arterburn said, with 80 career wins, four-time Maxwell and Brady tournament champions and two state appearances.

“There aren’t many girls (teams) that have 80 wins,” he said. “The seniors were great leaders and scholars that put the program on the map.”

But with the seniors leaving the program’s underclassmen have positions to fill.

Arterburn said next year’s team has three players returning—Autumn Hild, Josie Palmer and Tara Callahan—that will have to lead.

“Autumn and Josie have 60 wins under their belts and they realize some holes have to be replaced,” Arterburn said. “I think they’ll be good leaders and get people in the gym in the off season to keep our tradition going.”

In fact, next year, Arterburn said he plans to have both Palmer and Callahan playing together more often.

“We will be taller with two six-footers that are good,” he said. “We will have the same mental philosophy but each year you change offensive and defensive philosophies based on your talent level.”

He noted the he is looking forward to another successful season.
