Arthur County scratches Eagles from SHC tourney
Gunner Walker and Austin Helmer combined for 49 Arthur County’s points in a 60-58 victory over Brady Jan. 28.
The Brady boys basketball team didn’t play bad against Arthur County in the opening round of the Sandhills Conference Tournament but the Wolves were on top of their game
“A team can’t give up that many points to two players,” head coach Dave Jacobs said. “Then again in all the games I’ve watched this season they haven’t played like that.”
The Eagles came out of the gate with confidence scoring 19 points in the first quarter leading by seven going into the second period.
“The team was playing confident after we had just beaten them the week before,” Jacobs said.
In a back and forth second quarter Brady maintained a 29-24 lead at intermission.
“In the first half we showed good effort on the court,” Jacobs said. “We didn’t play as good as we could but we didn’t play terrible either.”
When the third quarter started Brady had built a nine-point lead before it started to dwindle.
Brady went cold, Jacobs said, as the Eagles got some good looks in the third period but shots wouldn’t fall and Arthur County’s shots started to go in.
Both teams scored 16 points and Brady still led 45-40 heading into the final frame, but Brady would turn the ball over. Brady was limited in shot attempts by the Wolves’ defense in the fourth quarter.
They didn’t allow us to get many shots up on offense because they created turnovers, Jacobs said. That was a big key to them winning the game.
Arthur County scored 20 points in the fourth and made big shots down the stretch of the final minutes to keep the Eagles from advancing to the semifinals of the SHC.
Brady duo Troy Lusk and Nate Sitorius scored 22 points and 19, respectively, to lead the Eagles.
“When those two have games like that I usually expect to win those contests,” Jacobs said. “But they had kids that countered and bettered them.”
The Eagles look to regroup before traveling to Hyannis Friday and Maxwell Saturday.
“We have to get some good vibes going this week and find a way to get on a roll at the end of the season,” Jacobs said.
Brady’s struggles of shooting the ball continue, he said, and it needs to improve during the tough stretch of games before districts.
