Haymakers pin a win over Gothenburg
In the first match between Gothenburg and Cozad, with the Battle Axe on the line, the Haymakers took down the Swedes in a convincing 52-24 win Jan. 21.
Before the match the Battle Axe, painted in school colors of both rival schools was presented at center mat. With the victory, Cozad claims the trophy and bragging rights for a year.
Swedes head coach Tom Scott knew two of his weight classes would be open but that turned into four when two additional wrestlers couldn’t compete giving the Haymakers a 24-point advantage to start the match.
“Those were points we couldn’t control but I think two of our guys would’ve pinned their opponent if they could have wrestled,” Scott said.
With good matches throughout by both teams, Scott said the Swede wrestlers handled their emotions well.
The best match during the dual was the 182-pound contest between Tyson Miller and Cozad’s Hank Pflaster, Scott said, which was decided 9-1 in favor of Pflaster.
“Tyson will be ready for district and conference,” Scott said. “That’s when we will see Cozad again.”
Swedes that earned pins were Skyler Kottwitz at 170 pounds and Jayden Miller in the 145-pound weight class.
