Balanced scoring boost Eagles over Bobcats

The Brady girls made four three’s in the first quarter against South Loup Saturday and the Eagles extended their win streak to nine games with a 72-51 victory over the Bobcats.

Valerie Most started the 25-point first quarter with back-to-back treys and the Eagles were off and running.

Brady didn’t allow a point for the first three minutes until Rachael Smith converted a layin for the Bobcats.

South Loup managed nine first-quarter points but Brady had six girls score in the first frame including consecutive three-pointers by Carissa Rayburn before the quarter came to a close in favor of the Eagles, 25-12.

“It felt great to get out to a good start,” head coach Lance Arterburn said. “You could sense the girls were focused on offense and defense to start the game.”

The girls continued shooting the ball well in the second quarter establishing an inside presence with driving and post-up baskets.

The Bobcats outscored Brady 15-13 but the Eagles took a 38-27 lead into halftime.

“Watching in warmups I could tell we were going to have a good night shooting,” Arterburn said.

Brady picked up the defensive pressure in the third quarter forcing 11 turnovers with its press and converting on 7-10 possessions in the first three-and-a-half minutes.

With a 20-point lead, the press was called off and both teams struggled offensively for the remainder of the quarter.

Leading 56-39 with one quarter of play remaining, the Eagles went on a 14-0 run over the next six minutes while limiting the Bobcats to only two baskets.

South Loup managed four scores in the final two minutes but the damage couldn’t be erased as Brady cruised to victory.

“We are taking this season one game at a time,” Arterburn said. “It is nice that we are building momentum moving forward.

He added the girls have been working on shooting in practice and that it has carried over to success in games.

“We are starting to find rhythm early on offense.” he said.
