Seniors beat Cozad for second victory
Late inning runs pushed the Senior Melons to a 10-6 win over Cozad June 11.
Gothenburg scored multiple runs in each of the last three innings to overcome a six-run deficit to win their second game of the season.
Cozad ran out to a 5-0 lead after the second inning with seven of the first 12 batters reaching scoring position. Cozad only scored one more run, in the bottom of the seventh before losing the game.
Gothenburg managed only three hits in the first three innings, when a bases-loaded rally in the second inning fizzled with a double play and a strikeout.
Melon base runners were again left in scoring position in the third inning.
The Melons scored their first run in the fourth inning when Trey Kolbo hit a ball into left field and advanced on a wild pitch to second base.
Ben Tiedemann hit a single into left field scoring Kolbo. Tiedemann tried advancing on the throw from left, but was called out at second base.
The Melons came up to bat in the fifth trailing Cozad 5-1, but a leadoff walk to Jake Matthies and an infield single by Ross Ostendorf put runners on second and third after advancing on an errant throw.
Justin Larson reached base and knocked in Matthies with a ground ball to the shortstop making in the fifth inning.
With Ostendorf on third base, Chase Ostergard hit a sacrifice fly to left field for an RBI and the Melons pulled within two runs, 5-3.
Gothenburg grabbed its first lead of the game with a two-out, three-run rally in the sixth with singles by Tiedemann and Ostendorf to make it 6-5.
Cozad knotted the score in the bottom of the sixth with a run thanks to a couple of errors and a hit batter.
Walker began a four-run inning for Gothenburg with a hit over the shortstop. He then stole second before a sacrifice bunt from Kolbo moved him to third.
A wild pitch allowed Walker to cross the plate giving the Melons a 7-6 lead. They weren’t finished, though.
Tiedemann drew a walk and after two wild pitches to Rodriguez and an error by the Cozad catcher, there were Melons on the corners.
Rodriguez stole second putting two Gothenburg runners in scoring position.
Matthies hit a ball to the second baseman whose throwing error allowed both runners to score for the Melons.
The score was 9-6 before Ostendorf hit a triple to drive in Matthies from first, giving the Melons a four run lead, 10-6. in the top of the seventh.
After two batters popped out in the bottom of the seventh, a Cozad runner was hit by a ball in play to end the game.
Tiedemann pitched a complete game allowing three hits and striking out four batters. The Melons were paced at the plate by Ostendorf who had four hits and two RBI’s in the victory.
The Seniors look to start a win streak at McCook on Wednesday (tonight) in a doubleheader. The Melons play at Overton June 26.
