Students collect a truckload for food pantry
Volunteers deliver food boxes to local families.
Brady Public School students collected enough items for the food pantry to fill the back of a pickup last week.
Their generosity will not only provide complete Thanks-giving meals for 12 Brady families but it will also stock the shelves of the pantry for the winter and beyond.More than 2,000 items were collected over a two-week period in the drive sponsored by the Student Council.
Dawn Jobman’s fifth-graders brought in 335 items to win the contest between grades and earn a limousine ride from Brady to Gothenburg for ice cream.
Jason Bryant, owner of Pristine Limousine of North Platte, provided the car.
The first-grade class was second in the contest with 304 items and fourth grade collected 241 items.
In all, elementary students brought nearly 1,600 of the 2,000 non-perishable food, toiletry and paper products collected.
“It was neat for the students to see the huge amount of food they collected all in one pickup,” said STUCO sponsor Jeanene Lusk. “It showed them what a difference working together to achieve makes.”
The Brady food pantry operates year-round entirely on donations.
It is available to any Brady area resident who needs extra help and it is a free, confidential service.
For Thanksgiving, volunteers delivered food boxes this week that carried a turkey, potatoes and all of the fixings for a traditional holiday meal.
Many family boxes also included cereal, a variety of canned goods and some paper products and soaps.
