Three members of the Brady chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America organized a benefit meal and volleyball contest last week to help raise funds for family travel expenses associated with cancer treatments for kindergartner Leyha Bartels.

Bartels, who is 5, is battling a rare form of childood cancer, called neuroblastoma, for the second time.

She and her parents, Jason Bartels and Catherine Stewart, are scheduled to fly to Cincinnati for a specialized radiation treatment on Wednesday (today).

Brady juniors Lexi Franzen, Valerie Most and Dusk Sabin put together a freewill donation sloppy joe meal and volleyball serving contest during Thursday night’s varsity matches with Hitchcock County.

The meat and table service were donated and the high school advanced foods class prepared the meal. Elementary teachers did all the serving.

Together, the girls raised $1,728.47 and presented the funds on Monday to Sue Spurgin, Bartels’ grandmother.

The fund raiser will be the basis of a district STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) project that Franzen, Most and Sabin will present during competition in Cozad in January.
