Farm chore relays prove who’s best
Lauer boys come out on top
Temperatures hovered near 90 degrees Saturday afternoon when a crowd gathered for the third annual farm chore relay.
The event, which has drawn a larger audience yearly, is sponsored by the Gothenburg Chamber of Commerce ag committee.
Competition was hot as well.
But when the dust settled, literally, the Lauer Boys—Matt, Lance, Chris and Aaron—couldn’t be beat.
Five teams competed against the clock in corn shucking, hay-bale pushing, setting irrigation tubes, gathering eggs, goat milking and drinking and backing trailers.
Three members of the four-member teams rode on trailers to various locations to perform the chores.
One team member drove a four-wheeler, often at frenzied speeds, to each location.
Eggs atop orange cones became hazards as teams were penalized if the eggs were knocked off.
Teams also had to detach and re-attach trailers at several locations.
The two fastest teams, the Lauer Boys and the Southsiders, competed against each other to determine who was best at farm chores.
Troy Franzen, Ross Ristine, John Hecox and Mark Ostergard made up the Southsider team.
The Lauer Boys clocked 2:33 minutes followed by the Southsiders with a time of 3:19 minutes.
Third place went to a team of Gothenburg Volunteer firemen that included Brock Anderson, Adam Finke, Chris Scott and Mike Wagner.
The only all-women team—LaRae Thompson, Kathy Oliver, Laurie Brown and Toni Terry—represented Gothenburg State Bank and earned fourth-place honors.
A Gothenburg High School FFA team finished fifth. Those members were Kyle Maline, Preston Franzen, Alex Spencer and Blake Ristine.
