Rodeo drawing card for holiday festivities

altIndependence Day activities this year in Gothenburg center around two nights of rodeo, a concert, fireworks and the annual Boy Scout barbecue.

Pony rides and kids’ activities are offered at 6 p.m., on both Tuesday, July 3, and Wednesday, July 4, with proceeds going toward the Dawson County Relay For Life.

All events, with the exception of the Boy Scout barbecue and fireworks, are at the rodeo grounds north of Lafayette Park.

Mutton Bustin’ sign-up starts at 6:30 p.m. both nights. Participation is limited to the first 15 kids. That event, plus the kids’ calf scramble and rodeo events, including a performance by professional rodeo clown Caine Hager, begin at 7 p.m.

After the rodeo, until 1 a.m. on July 3, Nashville recording artist Joel Warren will perform.

A new addition to the rodeo is a beer garden at the grounds, which will be from 6 p.m.-1 a.m. The event is sponsored by the Rotary After Dark Club.

On Wednesday, July 4, a slack rodeo begins at 7 a.m. with breakfast available in the concession stand.

The Boy Scout barbecue is set from 4-7 p.m. at the Senior Center.

Proceeds from the barbecue will help replace tents and camping supplies lost in a recent storm on a camping trip near Phillipsburg, KS.

Fireworks, sponsored by the Gothenburg Rotary Club, the City of Gothenburg and the Gothenburg Volunteer Fire Department, are set to detonate over Lake Helen at dusk.
