Semi, motor home crash leaves 1 dead
One person died and seven were injured when a semi-truck collided with a motor home at 4:16 a.m. Sunday about four miles east of Gothenburg on Interstate 80.
Troopers working the crash said that the semi struck the rear of the motor home as both were westbound on I-80. The semi then jackknifed and struck a bridge railing before coming to rest.The motor home then struck the rear of the semi, before coming to rest. The semi caught fire and burned; the motor home was also partially burned by fire.
Pronounced dead at the scene was Andrzej Piaszczynski, 56, of Rolling Meadows, IL, who was a passenger in the sleeper cab of the semi.
Six passengers in the motor home were taken to Gothenburg and Cozad hospitals:
Linda A. Smith, 52, Mt. Vernon, OH, transported to Gothenburg, then to Good Samaritan Hospital Kearney and admitted;
Abigail Smith, 15, Mt. Vernon, OH, transported Cozad, then Good Samaritan Hospital Kearney and admitted;
William Smith, 12, transported Cozad, then Good Samaritan Hospital Kearney and admitted with serious injuries;
Pete Smith, 53, Mt. Vernon, OH, treated and released at Cozad hospital;
Brad Ricker, 50, Wauseon, OH, treated and released at Gothenburg hospital;
Connie Ricker, 48, Wauseon, OH, treated and released at Gothenburg hospital.
The driver of the semi, Bogdan W. Kaszuba, 56, Des Plains, IL, was transported, then treated and released for minor injuries from the Gothenburg hospital.
Rescue units from Gothenburg and Cozad responded to accident.
