Girls 3rd as team at SWC

Gothenburg’s girls were forced to work hard for each point they earned Saturday during the Southwest Conference meet.

Stiff competition left the Swedes scratching and clawing their way into third place with 112 team points behind champion Cozad at 138 and runner-up Ainsworth with 117.

“That’s a lot of points for these girls to score in a conference meet,” said coach Steve Reeves. “I think we were about one person away from contending for the top.”

The coach said he has quality girls to enter in all events, there just is too few of them to go around.

Still, Reeves was pleased overall.

Gothenburg scored in each of the six field events, including three first-place finishes from seniors Abby Ambler, Joslyn Oliver and Ali Clark.

Ambler jumped 15-9 to win the long jump, Oliver matched her best this season in the high jump at 5-3 to take first and Clark cleared 9-0 with a strong cross win for the pole vault title.

“Those girls scored big points for us,” Reeves said.
