Gill involved in movie to be shown this weekend
If you go to the movie at the Sun Theatre this weekend, watch for the name “Party Ben” in the credits.
In “Just Go with It,” Ben Gill—a 1988 graduate of Gothenburg High School—produced some of the music.
Gill, 40, said he was contacted last summer by a representative of Sony Pictures who said that Adam Sandler, who stars in the movie with Jennifer Aniston, had heard a couple of Gill’s mash ups at a party in Spain.
Mash ups, or blends, are songs or compositions created by blending two or more pre-recorded songs.
“Sandler wanted to use them in his upcoming movie,” Gill said.
Although Gill said he’s had offers for his music to be in movies before, it didn’t happen until now.
Gill said he was hired as an “independent producer” to remake the mash ups Sandler liked in higher audio quality and with some changes.
“This was a complicated and painstaking process but interesting, since I was given the original ‘master tapes’ of all the songs to work with,” he explained.
The film’s producers eventually decided to include two of Gill’s mash ups in the movie—a combination of musicians in the General Public and Rihanna and a blend of The Police and Snow Patrol.
“The first mash up is used very briefly in a Jennifer Aniston ‘makeover’ scene, and the second is used for a longer scene at the end of the movie,” he said.
Gill’s mash up of Rihanna is used in many television commercials and the theatrical trailer about the movie.
While involved with the mash ups, Gill said he worked with a music supervisor from the film but never met or spoke to the stars.
“My contribution was very small and the film itself got mixed reviews but it was fun to be involved,” he said.
Gill lives in San Francisco, CA, where he describes himself as a remixer, producer and disc jockey.
The movie, rated PG-13, is about Sandler’s weekend trip to Hawaii. The plastic surgeon convinces his loyal assistant (Aniston) to pose as his soon-to-be divorced wife to cover up a careless lie he told to his much-younger girlfriend.
Show time is 7:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Sun Theatre.
