Eagle girls take second

Mullen wins SHC championship.

If the Brady girls could have put together an average quarter for the final eight minutes of the Sandhills Conference championship Friday night at home, they may have knocked off state-ranked Mullen.

But Brady only mustered five points in the fourth period against the Broncos and had to settle for the second-place trophy.

“It was a rough game both ways,” said Eagle coach Lance Arterburn. “I still feel like we are just as good a team as they are. We just haven’t found a way to beat them yet.”

Brady trailed the Broncos 17-15 after the first quarter and was down eight points 33-25 at halftime.

“We really did a good job of attacking the basket from the wings,” Arterburn said.

Brady’s defense stepped up its intensity as well in the third, holding Mullen to nothing more than a pair of free throws.

Heading into the final frame, the Eagles led 40-35.

“I felt good about how we were playing and where we stood going into the fourth quarter,” Arterburn said.

“All of a sudden we quit attacking like we had before,” Arterburn said.

Once the Broncos regained the lead, it was theirs for good.

Maggie Burke led Brady with 14 points followed by Jessica Schrad with 10.

The Broncos improve to 14-3 on the season and move to No. 6 in Class D-2 while Brady moves to 13-4.

The Eagles gained their spot in the conference championship after defeating Sandhills-Thedford in the semi-finals 51-36.

The Knights, also state rated at No. 10 in Class D-1, chipped into the 12-point lead Brady held at halftime when the Eagles relaxed a bit too much in the third quarter.

“I thought our defense was great all night,” Arterburn said. “We just didn’t attack and we didn’t shoot
