Swedes short-handed against Longhorns
An injury and a previous commitment left the Swedes short-handed in the post position Friday night during a game when size mattered.
Chase County’s starting lineup towered over Gothenburg’s with two players standing 6-foot-4, two players at 6-3 and a 5-11 guard.
“It wasn’t a good time to be without our height,” said Swede coach Roger Koehler.
Sophomore Logan Koehler suffered a head injury during Thursday night’s game and junior Korey Ahlenstorf was out of state leaving the Swedes short all the way around.
“Our guys battled hard but Chase County took advantage of our lack of height,” the coach said of the 57-44 Longhorn win in Gothenburg.
The Swedes fell behind early trailing 20-10 at the end of the first quarter and they were down 33-21 at halftime.
“We wanted to use our quickness against them,” Koehler said, “and we did, we just didn’t quite have enough.”
Gothenburg worked back into the game out-scoring Chase County 15-10 in the third quarter.
With roughly five minutes to play, the Swedes used a 10-2 run to get within 45-44.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t score again,” Koehler said. “We had good looks but we couldn’t get them to go in and gave up a few turnovers.”
With three minutes to play, Koehler drew up a play in timeout that would have kept the Swedes just a possession or two from taking over the lead but the shot rimmed out.
