Spiegel, Ehlers make all-dual team at Columbus
COLUMBUS—Gothenburg’s team standing at the Nebraska Invitational Dual Championships at Columbus may have been quite different had the wrestling team not been forced to give up lots of points due to open weight classes.
The Swedes typically wrestle with three open weights. That means spotting a dual opponent 18 points.
A couple of injuries between Friday and Saturday’s competition and a wrestler committed to taking the ACT test Saturday left Gothenburg coach Eric Manstedt short-handed and dropped the team to a third-place finish in the standings for their seven-team pool.
“To be as close as we were and giving up all those points shows we are wrestling very tough,” Manstedt said. “That’s a lot of team points to try and make up.”
Two Swedes were named to the all-dual team.
Senior Mitchell Spiegel went undefeated during the two-day tournament and took the 103-pound all-dual spot.
In the heavyweight class, Dane Ehlers also made the all-dual team. He went 8-2 for the meet.
All but two Swedes were .500 or better for the tournament. Manstedt said those are pretty good odds.
“In terms of matches wrestled, we scored more points than our opponents,” the coach said. “It’s just too bad we had to give up so many team points off the top.”
But, Manstedt said, that’s the cards the Swedes have been dealt right now.
Those open weights and a pair of injuries—Tre Ostergard and Aaron Lauer—mean the same sort of outcome at this weekend’s Flatwater Fracas in Grand Island.
Manstedt said there are 24 teams from all classes that will compete in four or five pools on Friday.
Saturday’s wrestling will be dual format in brackets according to finish on Friday.
“There are a ton of top-ranked teams,” Manstedt said. “We just want to go do our best and see how things come out.”
Wrestling begins at 1 p.m. Friday at the Heartland Event Center.
