Swede golfers end season without a state qualifier
GRAND ISLAND—Had it not been for a loaded district, the Swede golf team may have found its way to the Class C state meet this week.
Instead, Gothenburg put together its second best combined score of the season at the C-4 district meet in Grand Island on Oct. 5 and still finished without a state qualifier.
Grand Island Central Catholic breezed to a team title shooting 356 with four individuals in the top 10.
Wood River also qualified as a team with 377 and Doniphan-Trumbull secured the last team spot scoring 391.
Gothenburg finished eighth with a team total of 465.
“The only better team score we shot was at our own invite on our home course,” said coach Jim Henke. “The three teams who qualified from our district all had scores under 400. There were no other team scores less than 400 in the other four districts so I guess we were a victim of a loaded district once again.”
Henke said Gothenburg’s 465 would have placed third and qualified the team in the C-3 district.
Still, the coach was pleased with the team performance.
“I thought all the girls gave a great effort on this day just as they did throughout the season,” Henke said.
Sophomore Heidi Teahon continued her late-season surge, leading the team with 52 and 55 for a 107 total.
Senior Anna Boson was close behind with 109.
“Both girls got off to a slow start on the front nine but played really well after the first few holes,” Henke said.
