Sixty-four years and counting

Staying together through the thick and thin is what Janice Bachmann says is the key to a long marriage. “You’ll have hard times. Everyone does,” she said.

Janice and Stuart Bachmann will have been married 64 years on April 30 of this year. Sixty-four years ago on Valentines Day Stuart proposed. Unlike modern proposals that incorporate grand measures, Stuart said he gave her the ring and said if she accepted he would marry her, and if she didn’t that was okay.

Having both been raised in the same area, Janice said that she told a friend of Stuart’s, “I want a date with him.” He had just returned from serving in World War II as an Army tailgunner on B-17s and B-24s. Serving a little over two years, Stuart said he had been stationed about 60 miles north of London.
