Volunteers pick 30,000 pounds of corn for food bank

The logistics of moving an entire semi-load of sweet corn to families spread out over a 78,000 square-mile area seems daunting. Mike Gudenrath, of Omaha, lives for those details. As the food sourcing manager for the Foodbank for the Heartland, it’s his job.

“We have one of the largest coverage areas of any food bank in the U.S.,” he said.

Gudenrath was at Saturday’s sweet corn pick at the Monsanto Water Utilization Learning Center south of Gothenburg, where close to 100 community volunteers picked nearly 30,000 pounds of corn for the food bank. “When we get this to Omaha, we have a plan to have it distributed by Friday,” Gudenrath said. “To have it right before the holiday weekend is great.”
