Foodbank sweet corn pick set for Saturday, volunteers needed

Sometimes helping your neighbor can be as simple as spending a few hours in a cornfield on a Saturday morning.

This weekend Gothenburg residents will have the opportunity to do just that, as the Monsanto Water Utilization Learning Center south of town hosts its second annual sweet corn pick for the Foodbank of the Heartland.

“It is a great opportunity to use some of the resources we have at the Learning Center to grow a lot of food for people in need,” said Mark Reiman, Learning Center agronomist.

Volunteers should meet at the Monsanto office at 8:30 a.m. to get donuts, instructions and safety glasses before heading to the field. Last year 140 volunteers picked 24 pallets of corn—more than 32,000 lb.—in about three hours.
