Local crops take a beating

STORMY NIGHT: Severe storms made their way through the area Sunday evening, July 2, bringing torrential rains, strong winds—and unfortunately, hail. These pictures were taken Monday morning south of Gothenburg, where even nearly 12 hours later hail is still piled up next to a hay bale. Corn that earlier in the day was head-high has been reduced to stubble in many locations, and soybean fields have been all but wiped out. There were also reports of broken windows in the area, and residents were out Monday morning cleaning up limbs, branches and tree debris from yards and streets. Due to the holiday we were not able to obtain a full damage report prior to press, but hope to have more on this story in the July 12 issue of The Times.
