Thelma Vogel, 97 - May 29, 2012
Thelma Marina Lehmkuhler Vogel, 97, of Gothenburg died Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg.
A memorial service will take place on Saturday, June 2, at 11 a.m. at the Tallin Church with the Rev. Gene Purcell officiating.
A private family burial will be conducted at the Arnold Cemetery.
Vogel was born June 10, 1914, to John and Anna Marie Christensen Lehmkuhler at the family home near the Methodist Church on Garfield table southwest of Arnold.
She resided at the Arnold, Tallin and Gothenburg area, and graduated from Arnold High School in 1934. She then taught school at the Hall School north of Arnold.
On May 24, 1936, she was united in marriage to Leslie Vogel. The couple made their home south of Arnold. To this union, three daughters and one son were born.
Vogel was active with the Tallin Church where she served for many years as a Sunday School teacher and held various offices in ladies’ group. She was also active in 4-H and Home Extension.
She was a gifted seamstress and an excellent cook, and tackled many home remodeling projects, said family members. Family dinners were a special time for her and she kept a big garden.
Vogel enjoyed reading her Bible and was involved with Bible studies even after moving to the nursing home, according to family members.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Leslie, on their 70 wedding anniversary; a daughter, Carmen Vogel Ondrak; grandson, Marc Petersen; sons-in-law—Paul Hudson and Harold Birkey; her parents, John and Marie; two brothers—Henry and Lloyd; a sister, Mary Mills.
Survivors include: her daughters—Carol Birkey of Gibson City, IL, and Doris (Mike) Petersen of Council Bluffs, IA; a son, Leon (Janie) of Gothenburg; son-in-law, Floyd Ondrak of Arnold; grandchildren—Allan (Robin) Birkey, Tim Birkey, Lucinda Ondrak (Chris) Radebaugh, Denise Ondrak (Phil) Kass, Jeff (Julie) Ondrak, Karla Petersen (Ivan) Zeitz, Connie Petersen (Christian) Bateson, Carrie Vogel (Jamie) Kimmerle, and Alisa Vogel (Rick) Crown; great-grandchildren—Christy (Carlos) Calderon, Bobby (Kayla) Styck, Abby Birkey, Lynette Radebaugh (Josh) Carpenter, Hannah Radebaugh (Scott) Hochstein, Jennifer Radebaugh, Aaron, Austin, Alex Kass, Patrick, Joy Ondrak, Gavin, Matthew Zeitz, Nicholas Bateson, David, Olivia, Hailey, Hannah, Hazel Kimmerle, Madelyn Vogel and Rebecca Crown; six great-great-grandchildren—Grace, Atticus Hochstein, Zachariah Carpenter, Mateo Calderon and Bobby and Zach Styck.
Memorial are suggested to the Tallin Church and to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, National Headquarters Donations, 6520 North Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33309-2130.
