Twila Bortner, 85 - April 17, 2012


Twila L. Bortner, 85, of Maywood and Gothenburg passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg.
A visitation will take place at Blase-Wetzel-Strauser Memorial Chapel of Curtis on Sunday, April 22, from 3 to 8 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the Maywood Christian Church on Monday, April 23, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dale Heimer officiating. Interment will be at the Maywood Cemetery.
Bortner was born April 6, 1927, to Frank Louis and Alda P. (Smith) Ruppert, and lived most of her life in the Curtis and Maywood vicinity. She was baptized on Oct. 10, 1958, at the Christian Church of Maywood.
She grew up on the family farm south of Maywood and attended the Buff View School near there.
On April 10, 1943, she was united in marriage to LaDell Elijah “Buster” Bortner. To this union, four children were born.
Bortner went with her husband while he was serving with the Army to Fort Logan in Colorado, then they came back to Nebraska where resided south of Maywood near her father’s family farm.
There after, she and her husband moved north of Maywood on a farm, and then in 1966, they moved to Curtis where they lived for about 20 years.
In 2002, due to health issues, she went to live with her oldest daughter for five years. In 2007, she entered a nursing home where she resided until her death.
Bortner was a wife and caring mother, said family members, and she also worked at the local grocery store and for the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture.
She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary No. 1504 in North Platte and a member of the Maywood Christian Church.
Bortner loved her animals and her dogs especially brought her great enjoyment, and were always there for her when she needed them, according to family members.
She was proceeded in death by: her husband, Buster Bortner on Feb. 14, 1998; her infant son, Charles; three brothers and a sister; her parents, Frank and Alda Ruppert.
Survivors include: her daughters—Elizabeth (Roger) Broeker of Maywood, Mary (Richard) Ristine of Cozad, and son Kevin (Maurice) Bortner of Moorefield; eight grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
