Earl Barnes, 88 - April 18, 2007
Earl F. Barnes, 88, of Cozad, died Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at the Cozad Community Hospital.
Services were held on Monday, April 16, at the Berryman Funeral Home Chapel of Cozad with Jeremy Jech officiating. Graveside services were held at the Hillcrest Cemetery at Thedford.
Barnes was born on Sept. 2, 1918, near Milburn, to William and Cora Clarke Barnes. He attended rural school.
On Jan. 8, 1939, he married Alice Hopkins at her parent’s home in Callaway.
The couple lived in the Thedford and Halsey areas where he was employed as a ranch hand and worked cattle.
In 1970, he and his wife moved to Cozad where he was employed by a feed lot and Monroe Auto Equipment Co. After retiring, he continued working at the feed lot. His wife preceded him in death in 1989.
On May 14, 1993, he married Evelyn VanCleave.
Barnes was a member of the I.O.O.F. for many years and the United Church of Christ in Thedford for 21 years. He was also a member of the Church of Christ in Cozad since 1977, and in 1993, he joined Parkview United Methodist Church.
?He enjoyed riding horses, bird watching, dancing, visiting with friends and time spent with his family as well as gardening and sharing the produce with others, according to family members.
?Barnes was preceded in death by: his first wife, Alice; a son, Harold, who died in Viet Nam in 1966; six brothers—Leonard, Ray, Carl, Glenn, Everett and Lyle; three sisters—Erma, Nina and Mary.
Survivors include: his wife, Evelyn of Cozad; a daughter, Josephine (John) Morris of Thedford; a son, Myron (Delores) Barnes of North Platte; step-daughter, Connie (Larkin) Rossitter of Nogales, AZ; step-son, Carroll (Ann) VanCleave of New Jersey; sister, Stella Carruth of North Platte; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild, 10 step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
