Jim Buterbaugh, PhD, 71 - October 24, 2007
Jim George Buterbaugh, Ph.D., 71, of Salt Lake City, UT, formerly of Gothenburg, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2007.
A celebration of life service was held on Oct. 20 at the First Presbyterian Church at Salt Lake City. Graveside services will be held at a later date at Gothenburg.
Buterbaugh was born on March 20, 1936, at Kearney to Miles and Myrna Buterbaugh.
He grew up in Gothenburg and graduated from Kearney State College. He was employed as a high school principal and a radio announcer.
Buterbaugh received his doctorate of philosophy in instructional system and learning resources from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and was director of the Instructional Media Center.
He served as president of the Consortium of College and University Media Centers from 1976-1977 and was chairman of the Educational Systems and Learning Resource Center at the University of Utah. He also owned and operated the Meller Drammer, a summer stock theater in South Dakota for 10 years.
Buterbaugh was a member of the REO Club of America Inc. in the Salt Lake community. His life was enriched with photography, Old World Santa and Utah Jesters and Clowns of America, where he was known as “Buffy B. Esquire.” He was a church media development coordinator and an active owner in Eagle Springs East Lodge at Solitude Mountain Resort Village.
?He was also involved in lighting and sound production during the Emmy award-winning Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics. He worked as a docent at the Olympic Cauldron Park.
Buterbaugh was proceeded in death by his parents, Miles and Myrna Buterbaugh.
Survivors include: his wife of 51 years, Nancy Ann (Wise); children—Kimberly (James) Andrews, Lance Buterbaugh and Marc Buterbaugh; grandchildren—Alyson Marie, Amelia Alta, Austin Marc and Anna Sophia; a sister, Jill (Marvin) Franzen; several nieces and nephews.
