Wanda Ruth Block, 84, of Gothenburg, died Sunday Dec. 23, 2007, at Gothenburg.
Memorial services were held on Friday, Dec. 28, at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel at Gothenburg with Lonna Grabenstien, PMA, officiating. A private family inurnment will take place at Ft. McPherson Cemetery at a later date.
Block was born on Feb. 28, 1923, at Kearney, to Joseph and Maude (Moore) Fleharty, the youngest of 13 children. She grew up in the Cozad area and attended school through the ninth grade at District 85.
She was united in marriage to Milton Harold Block on April 3, 1945, at Gothenburg. The couple resided briefly in Tyler, TX, returning to Gothenburg in 1946 and raised a family.
Block was a member of the American Lutheran Church of Gothenburg where she was a Sunday school teacher, a youth group leader and chairwoman of the ALCW. She also was a Brownie Scout leader, a Cub Scout den mother, local Ground Observer Corps supervisor and the local and district chaplain and president of the Veterans Auxiliary.
She was a freelance artist who enjoyed painting downtown windows at the holidays and designing and accessorizing many festival floats as well as making ceramics and pottery, according to family members.
Block was preceded in death by her parents and 12 siblings.
Survivors include: her husband, Milton Block of Gothenburg; a son, Dean (Peg) and their children—Heather, Adam, and Joshua, all of Omaha; numerous nieces and nephews whom she requested to be honorary pallbearers.
Memorials are suggested to the American Lutheran Church Women, and to be designated for the Oaks Indian Mission in Oklahoma, 1512 Ave. G, Gothenburg, NE 69138.
