B. Donabell Peckham, 81 - February 27, 2008
B. Donabell Peckham, 81, of Gothenburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008, at Gibbon.
Services were held Monday, Feb. 25, at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel at Gothenburg with the Rev. Mike Larson officiating. Burial was at the Peckham Cemetery.
Peckham was born March 26, 1926, at Jay Em, WY, to Dan Gillman and Viola May Canaday Pierson. She attended elementary schools in Wyoming and graduated in 1945 from Campion Academy near Loveland, CO.
She attended Union College in Lincoln to work on her teaching certificate and took special work at the Southeast University Center at Torrington, WY.
Peckham taught at rural elementary schools in Colorado and Wyoming prior to marriage.
On June 7, 1959, she was united in marriage to John S. Peckham at Torrington, WY. She moved to Gothenburg to her husband’s family farm, and became a mother to four girls, then three more children were born into the family.
After her marriage, she stayed at home to raise her family and kept busy not only with her own children, but she was a foster mother for many years, and also babysat many neighborhood children as well. She was honored as Gothenburg’s Mother of the Year in 1978.
Peckham had a special place in her heart for bottle lambs and baby calves, and raised a big garden putting up lots of canned goods, according to family members.
She was a life-long member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and served in many capacities including clerk and community service leader.
Peckham enjoyed working with her hands whether it be crocheting dolls, sweaters, tablecloths and afghans or hand quilting wall-hangings and quilts or making clothes, said family members. She especially enjoyed creating one-of-a-kind quilts with no duplicates of each piece of material. She also enjoyed many years as a member of the Sod House Quilters and Hobby Club.
?She was preceded in death by: her parents, Dan and Viola May; two sisters—Rosella Pierson and Edna Loomer; two brothers—Walter and Eugene.
Survivors include: her children—David, Darlene and Shawn Peckham of Indianola, Douglas and Teresa Peckham of Gothenburg, Deea, Jon and Myla Kaufmann of Gibbon; three sisters—Ruby Scheller of Colorado, Maysie (Ray) Helms and Eunice (Ed) Horn, all of California; a brother, Donald Pierson of Wyoming; two sisters-in-law—Ethelyn Pierson of Torrington and Eileene Pierson of Riverton, WY; brother-in-law, Don Loomer of Walla Walla, WA; four step-daughters and families—Carolyn (Dave) Nelson, Jacque (Tom) Shotkoski and Marilyn (Don) Hays, all of Lincoln, and Barbara (Lennie) Devine of Grand Island; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
