Lydia Ronnekamp, 90 - March 05, 2008
Lydia Clara Anna Schliebe Ronnekamp, 90, of Gothenburg died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008, at Hilltop Estates of Gothenburg.
Services were held Saturday, March 1, at the American Lutheran Church of Gothenburg with the Rev. Matthew Groenke and Lonna Grabenstien, PMA, officiating. Burial took place at the Gothenburg Cemetery.
Ronnekamp was born on Sept. 17, 1917, to Julius and Minna (Frentz) Schliebe at the family farm home near Columbia, SD.
She grew up attending a one-room country school house through eighth grade and then graduated from Columbia High School.
Her first job was working at a drug store and, after high school, she worked at the post office before meeting Vern John Ronnekamp, who was her sister’s parochial school teacher.
On Nov. 27, 1938, she was united in marriage to Vern Ronnekamp at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Columbia. To this union, four sons and a daughter were born. The couple began their life together in Amherst, CO, then moved to Hastings and McCook, until they settled in Gothenburg.
Ronnekamp and her husband co-managed the Frontier Truck Stop & Oasis Cafe for 13 years. She then went to work for Schriver’s Market, where she worked for 30 years and retired when she was 78 years old.
She was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Gothenburg where she had been active. She also taught Sunday school and confirmation for a number of years, and was a member of the American Lutheran Quilters and the Prayer Circle.
?Ronnekamp’s favorite hobby was baking and she enjoyed miniatures, playing pinochle, bridge and kings in the corner, according to family members. Her life revolved around her family and she was happiest when together sharing memories.
?She was preceded in death by: her husband, Vern; four brothers—Herb, John, Heinz and Kurt; a sister, Erica.
Survivors include: her four sons—Arlan (Tip) Ronnekamp and Bob Ronnekamp, all of Gothenburg, Curt (Carolyn) Ronnekamp of Towanda, IL, and David (Donna) Ronnekamp of Jacksonville, FL; her daughter, Denie (Bryan Nordin) Ronnekamp of Denver, CO; 10 grandchildren—Tracy (Barry), Kurt (Susan), Chad, Carmen, Andy (Tabbatha), Stephanie, Amber, Whitney, Geoffrey and Jayme; six great-grandchildren—Halie, Reilly, Cameron, Jacob, Colby and Zoey; sister, Ellie Poe of Sioux Falls, SD; sister-in-law, June Schliebe of Aberdeen, SD; numerous nephews, nieces and a multitude of friends.
Memorials are suggested to the American Lutheran Church.
