Marilyn Owens, 71 - November 05, 2008
Marilyn Rose Owens, 71, of Curtis died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, following a courageous 25-year battle from injuries suffered in a horseback riding accident on Oct. 28, 1983, that took away her freedom.
A visitation will be held Wednesday from 1-8 p.m. with family present from 6-8 p.m. at Blase-Wetzel-Strauser Memorial Chapel of Curtis.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 6, at the Congregational Church in Stockville with the Rev. Dale Heimer officiating.
Owens was born on March 31, 1937, to Arthur and Alice Johnson at Farnam. She graduated from Maywood High School.
On Aug. 21, 1955, she was united in marriage to LaVerne Owens. To this union, a son and a daughter were born. The couple resided south of Curtis.
She and her husband farmed together and raised cattle. In 1975, she adopted the first wild mustang horses to be transferred to Nebraska and appropriately called the farm “Wild Horse Haven.”
Owen was the founder of the Frontier Wrangleretts Drill Team. Her life and love were her horses, especially her best friend, Poco, according to family members.
She was a member of the Curtis Berean Fundamental Church.
Owen was preceded in death by: her husband, LaVerne; her parents, Art and Alice; brothers—Johnnie Bob and Billy; her sister, Margaret Jorgensen.
Survivors include: her son, Larry (Marcia) Owens of Curtis; her daughter, Debra (Richard) Nelson of Lincoln; granddaughters—Dusty (Eric) Coulter of Gothenburg, Misty (Chris) Reitz of North Platte, and Lisa and Jenna Nelson of Lincoln; three great-granddaughters—Madison and Bailey Coulter and Jaycie Reitz; brother, Jim (Twila) Johnson of Stockville; sister, Millie (Cliff) Becker of Lincoln; brother-in-law, Harold Jorgensen of Curtis; sister-in-law, Lulu Mae (Ted) Herrick of North Platte; numerous other family and friends.
Memorials are suggested to the Frontier County Fairgrounds or the Arbor Cemetery: 39604 Hwy. 18, Curtis, NE 69025.
