Gerald Cumpston, 66 - January 28, 2009


Gerald A. Cumpston, 66, of Cozad, formerly of Gothenburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, at the Cozad Community Hospital.
Services were held on Monday, Jan. 26, at the Berryman Funeral Home Chapel of Cozad with the Revs. Irwin Edwards and David Bentley officiating. Burial took place at the Cozad Cemetery.
Cumpston was born on Feb. 17, 1942, at Gothenburg to Oscar and Tena (Duis) Cumpston. He graduated from Gothenburg High School.
On July 27, 1962, he married his childhood sweetheart, Lulu Fae Johnson, at Gothenburg where the couple lived until moving to Cozad in 1968.
He worked at Monroe Auto Equipment Company of Cozad for 37 years since graduating high school. He was employed as the quality manager for most of those years until his retirement in February of 1999.
Following retirement, Cumpston and his wife enjoyed traveling and spending time with their family, grandchildren and friends, according to family members.
Cumpston loved God and was a faithful servant, impacting many through his example of living for Christ, said family members. He showed his love for God by leading congregations in worship as he enjoyed gospel music. He also traveled to surrounding areas sharing concerts.
?He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene where he was active on the board for many years.
?Cumpston also enjoyed golfing, singing, playing the guitar and Nebraska football, according to family members.
?He was preceded in death by: his parents, Oscar and Tena; a brother, Roger.
Survivors include: his wife, Lu of Cozad; two sons—Ted (Heather) Cumpston of Highlands Ranch, CO, and Troy (Launa) Cumpston of Kearney; five grandchildren—Nikole and Marc of Highlands Ranch, and Trevor, Ben and Sarah of Kearney; a brother, Kenneth Cumpston of Gothenburg; two sisters—Audrey (Earl) Tabor of Farnam and Mary (David) McKim of Maxwell; sister-in-law, Janie Cumpston of Colorado Springs, CO; mother-in-law of the heart, Zeppelin Moore of North Platte; numerous other relatives and friends.
