Services were conduced on Friday, Aug. 30, at the Cozad United Methodist Church with the Rev. Doug Smith officiating. Burial with military honors took place at the Cozad Cemetery.
Smith was born Sept. 22, 1922, at Cozad to Harold “Buck” and Pearl (Moore) Smith. He graduated from Cozad High School with the Class of 1940.
In December of 1942, he entered the United States Army where he served in the Pacific Theater with the 902nd Field Artillery Battalion during World War II. Following his discharge in 1946, he returned to the Cozad area.
On Aug. 21, 1948, he married Martha M. Downs at Sumner. To this union, three children were born. The couple resided at Cozad, where he ran the parts department at Haley Chevrolet of Cozad before taking a management position at Midway Auto.
In 1961, following his recruitment for the management position, Smith became the superintendent of the newly established Monroe Auto Plant of Cozad, where he dutifully worked and walked the floor of the plant for 20 years, retiring in 1981.
Following his retirement, he kept busy working part time in carpentry and at Kildare Lumber.
Woodworking became a great passion of his and he made countless items for his family. He was a tinkerer at heart and came to be quite skilled at fabricating just about anything he put his mind to, according to family members. Smith’s garage was like a sanctuary to him, and over the years, he spent a great deal of time there working on his various projects.
In later years, he was a proud grandpa, family members said, and greatly enjoyed time spent gathered with family and grandchildren.
Smith was a member of the Cozad United Methodist Church. He served on the Cozad Planning and Zoning Board, was a member of the Cozad Elks Lodge, VFW, and had served for 30 years on the Volunteer Fire Department.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Pearl.
