Swede girls take control over Broken Bow 53-41
Max scores 24 to lead Gothenburg.
Despite a severe scoring drought in the second quarter that allowed Broken Bow to make up an 11-point deficit, the Gothenburg girls made easy work of the Indians Friday night winning 53-41.
“There was a point where we either weren’t taking or weren’t making any shots,” said Swede coach Tim Peterson of the second period.
Gothenburg cruised out to a 14-5 first quarter lead in which senior Emily Max scored half of the team’s points.
In the first half of the second period, Gothenburg put up only five shots and made just one.
That field goal, again by Max, was the only bucket of the period. Two free throws by Brittyn Munster rounded out the Swedes scoring.
Meanwhile, Broken Bow went on a run in the second, tying the score at 18-18 at halftime.
“Broken Bow’s record doesn’t show how good a team they are,” Peterson said. “They’ve got some very athletic girls.”
Still a six-point ball game midway through the third quarter, Peterson said he encouraged his girls to not get caught up in the physical play Broken Bow brought to the court and instead relax and follow the game plan.
With four minutes left in the third quarter, Gothenburg led 29-23. Two minutes later, the Swedes widened the gap to 11 points and never looked back.
Max scored 10 points in the third to spark the rally. She finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Ali Abramson chipped in 13 points including two three-pointers.
