Swedes edge Ogallala by one
By the narrowest of margins, the Swede golf team got past Ogallala in a dual Thursday at Wild Horse Golf Club, 199-200.
“We had a couple of kids that struggled,” Gothenburg golf coach Don Graham said. “We had a couple of kids that have started to play and be a little more consistent with their play. We just need to try and get them to get their scores a little lower.”Adam Speck and Riley Ostendorf tied for low Swede scoring honors, each with a 48. However, Trevor Reiss of Ogallala took meet medalist honors with a 42.
Several Swedes experienced some early putting problems.
“We had a big college tournament the following day on Friday,” Graham said. “I’m sure (course superintendent) Josh (Mahar) was preparing the golf course to be a little different than the kids are used to. He had mowed them down a little closer and was rolling greens. I’m sure the speed of the greens was a little bit different than what they had been practicing on the last three weeks.”
Gothenburg’s reserves carded a 209-235 victory over the Indian JVs. Drake Brand posted the low score for the Swedes with a 49.
The Swedes host the Gothenburg Invitational Thursday with golfers hitting the tees at 9 a.m. Schools entered include Bellevue East, Broken Bow, Cozad, Gering, Gothenburg, Holdrege, Lexington, McCook, Minden, North Platte, Ogallala, Sidney and Scottsbluff.
