Early lead never surrendered
Eagles withstand Bronco rally
Brady trailed for just 37 seconds early in its 43-40 home opener against Wauneta-Palisade last Friday.
Troy Lusk got the Eagles on the board with back-to-back baskets in their first two possessions but Brady took a three-point lead after Lusk hit his second trey of the first quarter with 2:05 remaining and didn’t look back.
At the end of the first quarter and throughout the remainder of the game, Brady showed a balanced attack with Nate Sitorius, Austin Widick and Trevor Mann contributing to the 27-18 halftime lead.
“We got off to a good start and played well in the first half,” head coach Dave Jacobs said. “We held them to 18 points which is something I really enjoyed.”
Wa-Pa outscored the Eagles in the third quarter 15-9 and pulled within three heading into the final period.
Jacobs said the lack of scoring may have been due to new people being in new roles and first game nerves.
“We missed some shots that kids normally make in practice,” Jacobs said. “Those same kids take those same shots and make them. It’s just a difference of game experience.”
The final quarter was filled with back-and-forth baskets and the Broncos tied the game with 45 seconds left.
A score by Widick put the Eagles up two with 39 seconds on the clock and a foul after a turnover put him at the charity stripe.
In two trips, Widick went 2-4 and put Brady ahead by three. The Eagles forced a turnover with .4 seconds left and ran an out of bounds play that ended the game.
The scoring leader for Brady was Lusk with 13 points.
Wa-Pa was led by Wes Anderjak with 13 points.
The Eagles will prepare all week for a tough road game at Paxton Friday at 8 p.m.
“Paxton is well coached and are really good,” Jacobs said. “Our mindset going in has to be playing tough the entire game.”
