GMH contracts signed for two new physicians

Oncology clinic to begin Monday

On Monday, contracts signed by two new doctors recruited to town were in the mail.

As a result, Gothenburg Memorial Hospital chief executive officer Mick Brant released their names.

Both physicians will be employed by GMH.

Dr. Garret Shaw, who worked as a family practitioner at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair, will start seeing patients in Gothenburg on Jan. 1.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Gene Pontecorvo, of Colville, WA, will start employment at GMH on Feb. 1.

A third physician—Dr. Michael Trierweiler— will join GMH on a full-time basis on Jan. 1 as an obstetrician/gynecologist.

Shaw is married to Rhonda (Sites) Shaw who is a 1993 graduate of Gothenburg High School and the couple has two school-aged children.

The physician also has relatives in Brady.

Shaw graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a bachelor of science degree in biology and from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1998.

UNMC is also where he completed a residency program in family medicine in 2000.

Shaw joined Memorial Community Hospital in Blair in 2001.

There he worked as a family practitioner until August and has treated emergency-room patients.

Since 2003, Shaw has also been medical director at the Golden Living Nursing Home in Tekamah.

Brant said the hospital board hired a recruiting firm last summer to find a family practitioner after long-time family practice physician Dr. David Hult moved to Lincoln.

A recruiter found Shaw and also Pontecorvo, the latter through an indirect process.

Apparently, Brant said the recruiter was working with a couple in Kansas who knew Pontecorvo through his teaching of medical students.

“The recruiter understands our organization and knew orthopedics was part of our long-range plan,” Brant explained.

Most of Pontecorvo’s professional career has been in Colville where he’s practiced general orthopedics.

He received his undergraduate degree from Loyola University, graduate degree from Tulane University School of Medicine and completed his residency in orthopedics at Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco, CA.

The Vietnam veteran was chief of

orthopedics at Bassett Army Medical Center in Ft. Wainwright, AK, worked at Mena Medical Center in Mena, AR, and at Mt. Carmel Hospital in Colville from 1994-2001 and since 2002.

Pontecorvo and his wife, Vicki Pontecorvo, have two grown children.

Trierweiler has been a visiting obstetrician/gynecologist at GMH since spring and will continue seeing patients once a week in North Platte at Platte Valley Women’s HealthCare where his partner still practices.

More detailed interviews with all of the physicians will be published at a later date.
