Gothenburg sweeps rival Haymakers

The Haymakers came to town Friday looking to upset Gothenburg but were swept in the last regular season game—25-16, 25-5, 25-12. The Swedes advanced to 26-4 on the season.

Head coach Mary Clark said even though Cozad’s record wasn’t great, the Swedes prepared for them like any other match.

“Our team and staff try to not overlook anyone,” Clark said. “There is such a rivalry between these two towns that their girls get up for this game and always play well.”

The Swedes showed signs of struggle early in the first set but managed to win 25-16.

Clark said the girls made some errors in that first set and gave credit to Cozad coming ready to play.

“The girls were a little upset with themselves for letting Cozad dictate the start of that first set,” Clark said.

After the first break, there was no looking back as the Swedes dominated the second set 25-5 and the third, 25-12.

Clark said the girls took control and played good ball those last two sets.

Tiani Reeves was the catalyst as she led the team with 18 kills and six aces.

The Swedes used a balanced attack as five girls managed four kills or more adding to the 41 combined kills in the match.
